Championing change with Professor Dame Sara Thornton

27 September 2024

In partnership with the University of Western Australia’s Modern Slavery Research Cluster, we were delighted to host Professor Dame Sara Thornton DBE QPM for an informal breakfast with our early-career researchers. Based upon the world’s most comprehensive data set on modern slavery, Walk Free’s Global Slavery Index, it is estimated that 50 million people are living in situations of modern slavery on any given day.

As Professor of Modern Slavery Policy at the Rights Lab in the University of Nottingham, Dame Sara’s research focuses on the areas of prevention, business responses, supply chains and the role of the financial sector in tackling modern slavery.

During the ‘fireside’ chat she shared insights into her 33-year policing career including serving as Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police and as UK’s Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner. Dame Sara also shared her wisdom on the art of disagreeing well and the importance of maintaining curiosity throughout your career.

Now as a consultant for CCLA Investment Management, Dame Sara is focused on tackling modern slavery in investee companies’ supply chains. During her visit to Perth, she met with industry leaders, researchers and students, including international human rights group Walk Free and a host of other organisations.
