Trailblazing astronaut, aquanaut, and emergency medicine physician Dr. Shawna Pandya recently visited the Foundation as a Distinguished Visiting Researcher, where she shared her incredible journey facing the world’s most extreme frontiers.
As the first named female commercial Canadian astronaut, Shawna is preparing to soar as part of the first all-female crew aboard a Virgin Galactic Delta-class spacecraft with the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences (IIAS) as early as 2026.
Named one of the “50 Explorers Changing the World” by the Explorers’ Club, she earned her aquanaut designation during the 2019 NEPTUNE mission and completed a second mission, NEP2NE, in May 2023—spending a total of 11 days and 10 nights underwater.
During her weeklong visit, she participated in a variety of events, including visiting the Square Kilometre Array Observatory and engaged with industry and local business representatives.
Dr. Pandya delivered her keynote, “From Zero Gravity to Grit: The Making of a Modern Explorer,” facilitated by Commander Kat, Perth’s RTR resident, at the WA Museum Boola Bardip.
Sparking the next generation’s imaginations, Dr Pandya featured in two ‘Ask an Astronaut’ events, where she answered questions and shared stories about her astronaut training.
She addressed students and faculty at Edith Cowan University, emphasising the importance of diverse perspectives and why unique viewpoints are crucial for building future solutions.
Additionally, she appeared on the panel for the launch of the latest Perth Dialogue, “Beyond Earth: The Case for Space,” alongside Professor Peter Quinn and Forrest Fellow Dr Ruby Wright. Where she highlighted the significance of space science and its vital role in modern research.
