In collaboration with UWA’s Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS), the Forrest Research Foundation was honoured to welcome Professor Jonathan Zimmerman, historian and free speech scholar from the University of Pennsylvania, as our latest Thinker in Residence.
Throughout August, Professor Zimmerman engaged with policymakers and academics across Western Australia, creating opportunities for meaningful dialogue on some of the most important issues facing our society today. His discussions included meetings with the Honourable Tony Buti MLA, WA Attorney General, Liam Staltari MLA, Shadow Minister for Education, and Kate Chaney MP, as well as politicians in Canberra and representatives from both the Australian Academy of the Humanities and the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.
Beyond the formal engagements, Jon immersed himself in the Forrest community, exchanging ideas through interactive workshops, one-on-one discussions and even enjoying a friendly game of tennis. These opportunities are what make our Thinker in Residence Program so special and give our researchers a chance to explore ideas and perspectives beyond their own disciplines.
We thank Jon for his generosity and insight throughout his month with us. His residency has made a lasting impact on our researchers and community, and we look forward to seeing where the conversations he started will lead next!
