Dr Nicholas Duddy
"If, after examining all the evidence, a writer can see a clear case of right and wrong, it is his duty to take sides – it is his duty to be committed." – Mona Brand

Nicholas Duddy is a Forrest Fellow in English and Literary Studies at the University of Western Australia. His current research project is a literary history of Australian theatre and the natural environment. His study explores how Australian theatre has depicted the continent’s vast terrain and engaged with historical events, political debates, and cultural ideas concerning the landscape. Drawing on archival materials, interviews with theatre practitioners, and the close study of famous and forgotten plays, his research considers the ways in which Australian drama has examined crucial issues confronting the nation – reconciliation and the recognition of native title, climate change and the environmental crisis – through representations of the natural world on stage.

Nicholas completed his doctorate in English at the University of Oxford in 2025. Prior to this, he studied at the University of Adelaide and the National Institute of Dramatic Art. He grew up in the Adelaide Hills on the lands of the Kaurna and Peramangk people.
