Yordanos Sisay Asgedom is an Ethiopian epidemiologist and biostatistician. Her PhD project examines how adverse pregnancy outcomes affect postpartum hospitalisation, mental health conditions, and short- and long-term cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk across women’s life course. Using Western Australian linked administrative data and the Raine Study cohort, the research will generate new evidence on the complex pathways between adverse pregnancy outcomes, mental health, and future cardiovascular outcomes.

The project will apply advanced epidemiological methods, including evidence synthesis and causal inference. By adopting a life-course framework, the study will address a key gap in understanding women’s cardiovascular risk beyond traditional factors.

Findings will support refinement of CVD risk assessment models to incorporate pregnancy-related and mental health factors, enabling more targeted postpartum screening, follow-up, and prevention strategies. Ultimately, the research aims to identify high-risk populations and modifiable factors to improve early intervention and long-term cardiovascular health outcomes for women.
