Dr Marisa Duong
Marisa developed an analytical biochemistry method to better understand how protein thiol oxidation contributes to worsening the disease progression of muscular dystrophy. This is a way of better understanding what happens inside the disease cells so effective treatments can be developed.

The aim of Marisa’s work is to develop techniques that might ultimately be applicable to other conditions and diseases including Alzheimer’s, atherosclerosis, diabetes, heart attack, HIV/AIDS, kidney and liver disease, muscular dystrophy, Parkinson’s, Rheumatoid arthritis, stroke and aging.

As part of her research, Marisa has worked Proteomics International at Perth’s Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research to develop advanced mass spectrometry methods with a wide potential of applications to confront some of the most complex diseases.
