Fast-paced, big ideas: Pecha Kucha night inspires

13 May 2025

A full house gathered this week for our biannual Pecha Kucha night, a dynamic evening of rapid-fire presentations which sparked inspiring conversations on street art, environmental resilience, visual storytelling, bravery and the ties that bind us as humans.

Organised in collaboration with the Minderoo Foundation, the event featured a diverse line up sharing their work through the engaging Pecha Kucha format – 20 slides, 20 seconds each.

Dr Alix Beattie opened the event with a discussion on her street art research. Next Dr Samuel Starko captivated the audience, outlining the importance of kelp for our living planet. Visual artist Lauri Parr introduced the audience to the power of photography, followed by Elise Reitze-Swensen, whose heartfelt talk discussed human connection. Sarah Nelson delved into bravery and author Alan Fyfe’s closed the night with a discussion of his new book, G-d, Sleep, and Chaos.

The Pecha Kucha night, now in its third year, continues to provide a platform for researchers, artists and creative thinkers to explore bold ideas in a fresh and approachable format.
