Studying the vision and visual navigation of nocturnal and deep-sea animals, Professor Eric Warrant from the University of Lund, Sweden visited the Forrest Research Foundation this month.
Delivering a keynote at the Biodiversity Conference 2025 – Nature Positive, he shared his most recent work centred on one of the great insect migrations on Earth, the summer mass gathering of an iconic Australian bogong moth (Agrotis infusa). During the keynote, he explained how bogong moths use the stars and Earth’s magnetic field to navigate to their ancestral summer caves.
Travelling all over southeast Australia through the spring, arriving from as far away as south-eastern Queensland and far-western Victoria, the moths gather in the hollows and crevices of Australia’s highest mountain, Mount Kosciuszko.
