Creative forces behind Samsara: A Cine-Concert spotlight filmmaking at Forrest Hall

19 February 2025

In partnership with the Perth Festival, the Forrest Research Foundation hosted acclaimed writer and director Garin Nugroho, Producer Gita Fara and dancer Juliet Burnett from Samsara: A Cine-Concert for an industry roundtable.

Samsara: A Cine-Concert is a classic blockbuster, which follows a man from a poor family who is rejected by the wealthy parents of the woman he loves. When he strikes a bargain with the Monkey King, by performing a dark ritual to gain wealth he inadvertently curses his wife and child into suffering. Samsara: A Cine-Concert is a universal story about the insatiable hunger to be what we’re not and the lengths we’ll go to make this happen.

Facilitated by Louise Renwick, Program and Partnerships Coordinator at Forrest Hall the roundtable delved into inspiration, the richness of Indonesian films, how embracing diversity can drive new audiences, the importance (and challenges) of collaborations, and how to make a blockbuster.
